So this is Lawrence of Arabia from Worlds '99 *sigh
of contentment at having to watch it several times to get the
commentary*
Since this whole debate is actually about Eurosport I'm not sure how it
fits in...but it's fun and I don't care :P
So...R=Robin Cousins, B=Barry Davis
Barry: Here's the defending champion Alexei Yagudin of
Russia...successfully defended his European title last month - can he
now make it a double double? His music is from Lawrence of Arabia by
Maurice Jarr (spelling??!).
R: He opens with a triple-triple combination he hopes. Triple axel -
beautiful triple toe-loop to follow -in combination the judges like to
see both jumps of equal size...I don't think there will be a problem
with that!!
(And he's off...steps, oh those steps )
R: His attempt at the quad toe coming up right here...and that's a
beauty!
B: And it's a really flowing start, the crowd giving him huge applause -
lovely flying spin too...
(cue melting into a little puddle at the middle step sequence
...slow section, no commentary...mmm...)
R: triple flip, triple toe loop combination...and SO effortless...triple
loop into a butterfly back sit spin - it's so well crafted and put
together this programme. [gap] Triple lutz, as easy as the rest.
(Heading to the end now, whirling arms, crazy feet and I'm in heaven )
R: That's it. (Alexei is charging around shaking his fists...he must be
hyperventilating almost as much as me )
R: They won't come much better than that - and I have to say if I wasn't
up here with a microphone I'd be joining the rest of this audience
standing on my feet and stamping - just superb.
B: Tatiana Tarasova his coach can hardly contain herself (LOL lovely
shot of TT shaking HER fists too...and what about me??!!). Alexei
Yagudin...he made one mistake in the short programme which cost him the
leadership, he went into the free programme in 2nd place - but he's laid
down some challenge to his younger compatriot Evgeny Plushenko. (Huge
huge cheers, and replays...)
R: This triple axel at the beginning of the programme covered a good
20-25 feet of ice - and the rest just flew. Very well placed in the body
on the the quad (of course...), plenty of time to prepare for the
landing. All the triple jumps worked with ease - here the triple
flip-triple toe combination, triple salchow...the spins were good...
choreographically it just holds together really nicely (I admit this is
an insipid word, even by Robin Cousins' standards...NICE??? What is
NICE??).
B: A complete program from the world champion who's matured since
winning that world title...
(we're in the kiss and cry now..)
...and there's a 6.0 from the Polish judge for technical merit - 2 5.9's
and the rest 5.8's. Presentation should be - not - I was going to say
every bit as good, but of course it's not quite, because there isn't a
6.0 there..! (duh! LOL!). 6 5.9's and 3 5.8's. It is hard to see young
Plushenko going past that. (Dead right, mate...!!!)
...cut to Plushenko about to skate, and there you have it...
I was gonna leave this as it was and post it with just the routine
commentary, but then I carried on watching and heard what Robin Cousins
had to say about Alexei afterwards... S=Sue Barker...
S: And Mr Yagudin.. what can you say about him?
R: In a class of his own- the finesse tonight, I mean I've never seen
him so focused, and yet so calm at the same time, it was just wonderful,
I mean *slightly hazy look* wonderful...
S: Where does that performance relate in terms of free programmes that
you've seen?
R: One of the best so far...with the quad, the triple-triple
combinations, great packaging, a total package - I was very envious to
watch that tonight, I have to say!!
S: And he just thrives on the competition and handles the pressure so
well.
R: Well, he does, and especially now they're required to do this twice
in one week, not just once - to be able to come out and skate like that
consistently like that ovcer 3 days is taxing, and he was just superb.
:-)
